Most schools do not write their policy on how the cameras will be used before
seeking estimates for installation of a CCTV system in schools. For example, the
list of people who can view the tapes, or discs, should be defined before a system
is installed, as it is a key factor in the design.
Only a school headmaster or head mistress, school board member or an approved
authority such as the police can view the recordings. A parent, student or teacher
may not have an automatic right to view .
Having cameras in the school does provide parents with an added sense of security.
However, care must be taken to ensure that cameras are not intrusive, and do not
affect the rapport between teachers and pupils.
G4S Security Systems recommends that a security installer is involved in the design of
the system, and discusses the key factors to be considered, before any commitment
is made.
G4S Security Systems provides this advisory service free and without obligation for a number
of schools and local authorities.
