Combating Tailgating

One of the inherent weaknesses of Access Control systems is the fact that unless integrated with the right entrance technology, it is almost impossible to either monitor or control the number of unauthorised people that enter or leave through an entrance when a valid access card is approved.

One common problem suffered with all such systems is the practice of following a valid user through an open door - known as tailgating. Tailgating is easy to do and common practice,
often done by people with valid cards that are too
lazy to bother with the access system and too often done by people who should not be in the building
at all. Inside the building, the same issue affects
the use of standard access controlled doors. This creates a potential threat to the assets and people in that building.

Tailgating is one of the biggest threats to a secure environment, particularly in larger offices, facilities or public buildings with large numbers of people, where it becomes virtually impossible for employees to be expected to recognise each other. The choice of technology used must take these issues into account, balancing appearance and usability, with safety, easy disabled access, and security.

What is the solution?

Due to increased awareness of security and access control, many companies that have never considered using turnstiles now find themselves forced to implement an access control system utilising turnstiles. Many of these facilities are corporate headquarters, prestigious building lobbies, libraries, museums and government institutions, where appearance is almost as important as function.

Turnstiles are a very practical solution when absolute controlled entry into buildings is required. G4S Security Systems can offer a range of options to perfectly balance these issues whether it is full height, half height or for internal or external applications. However, if the traditional style of turnstile is not suitable for a particular environment, there is the option of optical turnstiles. G4S Security Systems currently favours Fastlane optical turnstiles to provide our customers with the most effective solution.

The Fastlane design concept allows a flexible approach to providing effective access control in areas where previously security had been desirable but the associated aesthetic implications had been unwelcome or prohibitive. Fastlane systems are designed using the latest infra-red technology, either with or without the integration of physical barriers, to bring you the very latest in high-tech entrance technology for the modern business environment.
