About London Underground Limited
London Underground Limited was formed in 1985, but its history dates back to 1863
when the first world underground railway opened in London.
Today London Underground (LU) is a major business, with over 3 million passenger
journeys a day - making it the busiest railway network in Britain. It runs 511
trains over 253 miles of track, owns 253 stations (and serves 275), employs over
13,000 staff and has vast engineering assets. LU was previously a subsidiary of
London Transport and as such, Government-owned. As of July 15 2003, it merged
with Transport for London and thus became part of the Greater London Authority
family.
On April 4 2003, the last of three contracts was signed between LU and its
new private sector partners. Metronet (two contracts) and Tube Lines (one contract)
are now responsible for maintaining and upgrading LU’s infrastructure. Responsibility
for running the network - the stations, train operations and signalling and safety
remains with LU.
There are also ongoing plans to extend the reach of the LU network, following
on from the opening of the Jubilee Line Extension in 1999 which marked the greatest
single expansion of the Underground in the past 30 years. The line has given previously
unserved suburbs access to the Underground and will play a major role in the continuing
regeneration of the Docklands area.
