G4S Security Systems, part of G4S Security Services, has won the award
for the ‘Best Integrated Security Solution’ at the ninth Security Excellence Awards,
held at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane on 10 October.
The prize is in recognition of an integrated security system designed by ACC
Controls, now part of G4S Security Systems, for the West Midlands Police, which
was commissioned in April 2006. The objective was to find a means of combining
physical and logical security in a dynamic working environment. Utilising a single
integrated platform, G4S Security Systems linked CCTV applications, visitor control,
time and attendee recording mechanisms and intruder alarms.
The system is centred on three principles: physical access, logical access
and ‘single sign on.’
G4S developed Smartcards and fingerprint biometrics to monitor physical access
and, in more secure areas, installed a triple authentication solution comprising
of card, fingerprint and PIN.
The logical access controls permit staff to access only their authorised software
applications, while a Smartcard stores the users’ credentials. A Smartcard or
biometrics reader at the individual workstation allows the user to access permitted
applications.
By integrating physical and logical controls, G4S Security Systems was able
to introduce the third element, ‘single sign on’. This allows users to make use
of a single password to enter a wide range of secure databases.
Nick Bettes, Managing Director, G4S Security Systems, said: “The challenge
involved in providing this security system was huge. It needed to identify the
location of relevant staff at any time, with the information linked to the central
and HR databases.
“The system had to be unique, dealing with large amounts of information, but
at the same time easily accessible. Furthermore, it had to be capable of expansion
to all 150 premises occupied by the West Midlands Police. The award is a fitting
reflection of its success.”
